A person who purchases the goods or services for his own consumption and not for resale or manufacture is said to be consumer, for some consideration. For e.g. you buy a movie ticket.

Who and when should a consumer complaint filed?

If you have any complain regarding grievances about any product or services like quality, defective material, charged with excess price, etc. then you can file a complaint and seek protection. Earlier consumers were not aware much about their rights but in recent years, consumers have become more active about claiming their rights when they are cheated. Consumer protection and rights in India are dealt by Consumer Protection Act 1986. According to this act following can file the complaint:

  1. Consumer
  2. Any registered voluntary association
  3. Two or more consumer having a common interest.

One must file the complaint within 2 years of the cause of action otherwise the court will not entertain the complaintafter completion of 2 years.  Exceptionto this is ‘reasonable causes’ for delay in filing the complaint.Complaints can be filed in both Hindi and English.

You can file a consumer complaint online through the following steps:

  1. The government runs a portal called the Consumer Online Resource and Empowerment Centre (core.nic.in). It is a complaint and grievance redressal system run by the Consumer Co-ordination Council and supported by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India.
  2. You may lodge your complaint online with National Helpline portal. For this you just have to visit the website

Or you may register your complaint in Department of Consumer Affairs by just dialling the toll free number- 1800 11 4000 or you may SMS on this this number- 8130009809.

You have to click on the new user and then you have to register. For this you need to provide with the details like name, email, address and phone no. of the complaint

  1. After registering, you have to log-in and fill the user name and password, then go to ‘File complaint’ and file the complaint.
  2. You need to choose the complaint type i.e. regarding products, services providers etc.
  3. When you choose the complaint type, a page containing registration form will appear which you have to fill up. The form will contain the necessary details of the problem.

Then you have to click ‘submit’ to submit the complaint.

Once you submit, complaints assigned an electronically generated number and this number can be used to track the status of the complaint until it is resolved.

As per the website, you can get resolution in 3 months. You may check the status of your complaint by logging on to the website until it is resolved.

One can file multiple complaints using the same log in credentials and the same can be tracked online also.
