Right to information is a right to every citizen under which a person can ask for the information about the central and the state government departments and the officials which is supposed to be of the public interest. And it is a duty of the authorities to maintain the records of their activities respond within in a span of 30 days.Right To Information (RTI) promotes the transparency as well as accountability of the officials.

Where the RTI can be filed:

There are three modes to file the RTI                                                                                    

  • Online – visit the online website rtionline.gov.in and login to file the RTI
  • via POST – send your application to the concerned department
  • By speed post or registered post                                                                                     
  • In Person – Visit to the concerned Public information officer of the department and the officer will guide you in person for further process.

Process of filing the RTI:

These are the following steps that are required to be followed while filing the RTI

  1. Find out from which department you want to seek the query. Either central government or state government.
  2. Write the application the department specifying the subject on which you want to seek the information and there is no need to clarify the reason that why you want the information.

C) Payment is to be made of Rs.10. the payment can be made by Via Indian postal service/demand draft/Cash/online. Proof of the payment should be attached with the application.

Fee procedure: The applicant further also required paying the fee for the cost of providing the information. Rates of fee as prescribed in the rules given below:

  1. Rupees two for each page (in A-4 or A-3 size paper) created or copied ;
  2. Actual charge or cost of price of a copy in larger size paper ;
  3. Actual cost or price for samples or models;
  4. For information provided in diskette or floppy , rupees fifty per diskette or floppy; and
  5. For information provided in printed form, at the price fixed for such publication or rupees two rupees per page of photocopy for extracts from the publication.

D) And submit the application online/via post/in person.

Response of the RTI:

According to the Section 7 of the RTI act, 2005 the RTI must be replied within 30 days and the life and death cases it must be replied within 48 hours.
