Right to Information- What it is for?
RTI provides any individual the right to access information which is held by or under the control of any public authority, and also includes the right to inspect the work, document, records, taking notes, extracts and certifies copies of documents/records etc, of materials and also obtaining information which is stored in electronic form.
A RTI Application can be filed under RTI Act, 2005. It was established to make government accountable for its work by empowering citizens to demand information regarding activities.
Who can file an RTI and when to file an RTI?
Any citizen of India can ask for information whether they want to inspect the work and activities of the Government or simply exercise their right to information.
Every person can go for filing an RTI at any time whenever he wants to seek any information regarding any government organization, or it’s any ongoing programs, any public authority, etc. He has the right to question the government, inspect their files and take copies of Government documents and also of government work. All these right have been granted by the RTI Act, 2005.
Grounds to seek information under RTI Act, 2005
As a citizen, applicant under the RTI and as an information seeker, you are not required to give any reasons if you wish to seek information under the RTI Act.
The RTI Act is expected to improve the quality of decision making by the public persons, and the government with the help of removing obstacles in the path of knowing information regarding various ongoing and present programs.
