REDUCTION IN TRADEMARK REGISTRATION TIME
The Central government has decided to revise the time period for registration of trademark in India. The Finance Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley said that such a policy would reduce a lot of time for getting the registration done by facilitating online applications.
The integral number of trademark registration requests pending with the government as on 1st February 2016 was 5, 44,171. Earlier, a period of 18 to 24 months was required for registering any trademark.
In order to bring down the amount of time required, the trademark offices have been modernised, and the aim is to reduce the time taken for examination and registration to just 1 month by 2017. The government has already hired around 100 new examiners for trademarks. Examination time for trademarks has been reduced from 13 months to 8 months, with the new target being, to bring the time down to one month by March 2017.
Time duration of one month is very less compared to the existing mechanism. However, this decision might attract higher government fees.
